Listen to me. I work terrible hours. I often have to leave things early. I arrive to things late. I get phone calls in the middle of the night and all day long. I’ve never been shot, but I have been stabbed, and I got lye thrown in my face once. And I’m a homicide detective. Not a policeman or a policewoman.

My first reaction to a remake of Prime Suspect was a rather loud “Oh HELL NO!”, but after watching the pilot, I am quite taken with this show. Admittedly, it shares only a passing thematic similarity to the original starring Helen Mirren, but I think that works in its favor. Maria Bello is no Mirren and I like it that way. Most of the criticism I’ve read for the show is that the sexism feels a bit dated. In the alternate reality that is TV, female cops, even women in charge of units, are treated as absolute equals, but the world we actually live in, I have no doubt sexism is still apart of a female cop’s every day experience in the NYPD and police departments across the country. According to 2009 statistics, women only compromise 18% of the NYPD with only 46 serving with a ranking of Captain or above. FORTY SIX! So, this show isn’t dated, not in the least, unfortunately.

 My thoughts exactly.
